IFTA registration and renewal help
The International Fuel Tax Agreement lets a qualifying interstate motor carrier license through its base jurisdiction and report fuel use across member jurisdictions. Mann Registration helps review qualification, prepare account and vehicle information, coordinate license/decal work, and organize the records needed for quarterly returns.
Confirm the vehicle and route qualification
IFTA generally applies when a qualified motor vehicle operates in the base jurisdiction and another member jurisdiction. Axles, gross or registered weight, combination weight, business use, and route geography matter. Intrastate-only and personal recreational use follow different rules.
The license is only the start of compliance
Carriers must maintain usable distance and fuel records and file returns for required periods, including zero-activity returns where the base jurisdiction requires them. Decals, account status, and returns should be reviewed before dispatch and renewal.
- Unit and fleet inventory
- Trip-level jurisdiction distance
- Fuel receipts and tax-paid evidence
- License and decal records
- Quarterly return and payment confirmations
Separate IFTA from IRP and state weight taxes
IFTA does not replace apportioned registration, Oregon weight-mile, Kentucky KYU, New York HUT, New Mexico weight-distance, Connecticut Highway Use Fee, trip permits, or other state accounts.

What Mann does—and what the agency decides
Mann Registration can help collect facts, prepare filings, organize records, and track follow-up. Mann is an independent private service provider, not Base-jurisdiction fuel-tax agency and the International Fuel Tax Association, and cannot approve an application, change an agency record without the required process, give legal or tax advice, or guarantee timing or results.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need IFTA if I only operate in California?
A vehicle operating only within California generally does not qualify for IFTA. Other California fuel-tax or motor-carrier requirements may still apply.
Do I need to file when there are no miles?
Base jurisdictions commonly require a return for every active reporting period, including a zero-activity return. Check the current account and agency instructions.
Does IFTA replace fuel receipts and trip records?
No. Detailed distance and fuel evidence supports the return and must be retained under the base jurisdiction’s rules.
Does an IFTA license replace state weight-mile accounts?
No. State weight/distance/highway-use programs are separate and may apply in addition to IFTA.
